File Sizes

File size is an important issue for your viewers especially if they use a dial-up connection to access the Web. The total size (weight) of your Web page is determined by adding the file sizes of all the images called by the Web page AND the HTML code page of the website itself. For instance this HTML page is: 23K. The total weight of all the images used by this page is: 37.9K. Making the total weight of this page: 60.9K

Web pages 30K or under are perfect but difficult to produce with a rich graphical environment. I try to keep my home page as light as possible and if needed make subsequent pages heavier.

If you find your Web page is just too heavy try re-optimizing your images in Fireworks to make them lighter. Use different color depths or in the case of JPGs a lower quality output. Keep working with them until you achieve a reasonable page size of around 50K.
