Using Gradients:

  1. CREATE an object
Draw a rectangle on the stage using the RECTANGLE TOOL.

  2. SELECT the object
Double click on the rectangle with the arrow tool to select the both the STROKE and the FILL.

  3. Open the FILL PANEL
Select WINDOW / PANELS / FILL.

  4. Choose LINEAR or RADIAL GRADIENT
For this exercise we will use LINEAR GRADIENT. From the DROP DOWN MENU in the FILL PANEL select LINEAR.

  5. Default gradient colors
Your object defaults to the black and white gradient colors.

  6. Finding the color palette
Select the first gradient color pointer on the left. Selecting the pointer triggers a color palette on the right side of the FILL MENU.

  7. Selecting the gradient colors
Click on the palette pointer to open the palette.

  8. Choose a color
Click on any color in the palette to use it in your gradient.

  9. Changing the second gradient color
Repeat steps 6 through 8 on the second color.

  10. Editing the color coverage
To use either color more or less in the gradient just drag the color pointer across the gradient fill panel. After releasing the pointer you'll see the coverage has increased.

  11. Adding more colors to the gradient
Place the cursor anywhere next to an existing color pointer and click. A new pointer is added. You can change the color associated with this pointer by repeating steps 6 through 8. For this example I've added a blue color. To remove a color pointer just drag it down and it disappears.

  12. Selecting the TRANSFORM FILL TOOL
To change the direction, size or position of the gradient select the PAINT BUCKET FILL tool first then select the TRANSFORM FILL tool.

  13. TRANSFORMING the fill
Click on the object twice so that handles appear around the filled object. Handle 1 rotates the fill. Handle 2 changes the width of the fill. Handle 3 adjusts the position of the fill.
