Banner Ads

You may from time to time be asked to create banner ads for your customer. Banner ads come in all different sizes and weights but the most popular size is 468px X 60px.

Banner ads are created in Fireworks MX® pretty much the same way you would create a web page. The differences are:

  • No slicing is required.
  • The canvas size will be created at the size required by the banner.

Use the drawing tools to start creating your banner.

The most difficult part of creating banner ads is meeting the file weight restrictions set by the companies that host the banners. Of course if your banner ads are for your own website you can make them whatever size you like.

Create a 468X 60 banner:

  1. Open Fireworks.
  2. In the dialog box that appears select "Fireworks file" under "Create New".
  3. In the "New Document" window change the default width to 468 and the height to 60. Make sure the resolution is set to 72.
  4. In the properties panel at the bottom of the page select the square to the right of "Canvas". A palette will open allowing you to set a back ground color for your banner.
  5. Using the drawing and text tools start designing and building your banner ad.
  6. When you are happy with the results you will need to output your banner as a GIF file.
  7. In the Optimize panel make sure that Gif Websnap 128 is selected from the dropdown box.
  8. In the optimize panel adjust the number of colors to be exported with your banner. This is very important because the number of colors is the main factor in determining the weight of your banner. The higher the colors the heavier your banner ad will be. You'll have to find a good balance between file weight an image quality.
  9. Hit F12 on your keyboard to take a look at your banner is it will appear when exported.
  10. To check the file weight select "2-Up" at the top of your window. At the bottom of the window you will see the file size.
  11. When you're satisfied with you banner go to File/Export to render your final banner.
