Domain
Names
Domain
names are unique names given to website
domains. A unique IP address (a series of
Internet Protocol numbers) also corresponds
with this name. You can navigate throughout
the WWW using just the IP addresses! Domain
names are issued strictly because they are
much easier to remember than a string of
meaningless numbers.
Once
you have secured your domain name you
will need to arrange hosting to store the
content for your entire website. This is
done by purchasing server space from one
of the thousands of Internet hosting companies.
Generally you receive a set amount of storage
space, email addresses and FTP login information
for set monthly or yearly fee. Fees can
vary from free to hundreds of dollars depending
on the options you select. Generally reliable
hosting costs $10 to $25 per month.
WARNING!
Hosting companies are notoriously sloppy in their management
and provide less than useful technical support.
There have also been many instances of fraud. For
this reason we recommend APLUS.net or PUREHOST.com.
Buying a Domain Name
Domain names are purchased online from companies such
as VerSign and thousands others who are in the business
of helping you select a unique name and registering
it with the appropriate Internet agencies so it can
be accessed by computers anywhere in the world.
